Battle of Ashby de La Zouch

Steven MacLeod

Giant task lay ahead

Finally some Sun and cricket on the same day, upon arriving in Ashby you could see what a giant task was ahead for our troop, with a field of 80 Allstars, limited from 120 last year, further juniors training in the nets and on the outfield, Ashby were always going to have a strong side with a battalion of players to choose from.
Led by First Lieutenant George O’dell and Stan Wozencroft Ratby looked for a strong start with the bat, some lovely shots played only to keep finding the fielders, Stan celebrating a 4 shown how rare it was to get the ball over the ropes.
Noah and Evan then having the same difficulties in finding gaps, but none more unlucky than Rosie and Oscar, on another day these pair would of bludgeoned 20-30 runs but for the strength in quick attacking fielding.
Final pair Tom and Isaac finally found some gaps towards 3rd man but despite only losing 5 wickets to a total of 53, you feared the cavalry charge was coming.....

In Reply Ashby had a steady start, Ratby Bowled some very tight lines early, Oscar taking the 1st wicket, the pairs seemed to keep improving as they hit the crease though, some adventurous running when the ball was hit straight to the fielders proved a huge success with several over throws being ran after excellent attempts at the stumps saw the ball disappear into the outfield.

After a week of training in our running between the wickets Ashby demonstrated exactly how it should be done, our fielders deeper than theirs and their hit and run attitude paid off.

A grand total of 115/3 being scored by the victors, but we escaped the battlefield with minor cuts and no huge losses, our little soldiers live to fight another day.
